Imps v Morecambe stats preview

It seems an awful long time ago since I last wrote about us playing Morecambe. They were our first home opponents back in the Football League, back then we were wide-eyed and excited to be back. Now, it’s like we’ve never been away as we’re in the thick of the play off action.

Morecambe opened our eyes to the standard we had to expect, the 1-1 draw was the most one-sided you’ll even see, but Aaron Wildig almost broke out hearts on our return. Matt Green saved our blushes on an afternoon that was as much of a shock as it was joy.

I’m investigating the possibility of a new feature in the build up to games looking purely at the stats and the guys at www.kickoff.co.uk have provided me with a sample for our upcoming fixture. If these are to your taste, I may well have them on the site between now and the end of the season.

The Imps and Morecambe are at opposite ends of the table right now, but in truth there’s little to separate us going into the game. If you look at our away form and their home form, there’s very little difference.

Whilst perhaps their home form should be better than our away form, it does indicate we’re in for a rough ride on Saturday. They recently beat Exeter at home and they’ve won away at Wycombe. They might be lower in the table than us, but they’ve averted a relegation crisis and aspire to finish as high as they can.

Whilst our home and away form is similar, our ten game form is better than theirs. It’s interesting here that in our last ten games, we’ve only failed to score once. For a side with just three strikers on its books, we do remarkably well in front of goal. They’ve drawn a blank on four occasions, meaning perhaps a tight defence can keep them out. Will it be Scott Wharton and Bozzie again this week, or has James Wilson recovered fully from his injury?

This shows Morecambe’s collective home results against our collective away results. The only conclusion we can truly draw is the game is likely to be a stalemate, but then that seems to be the probability for every game we play. It does show that Morecambe tend to have close run matches, only once winning by two goals or more at home. However, we’ve won by two or more on three occasions. You thought we were shot-shy too!

Finally, a couple for the gamblers amongst you, looking at the potential for this to have more than 2.5 goal in it, or for both teams to score.

What do you think of the new graphics? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts, they’ve been supplied to me by www.kickoff.co.uk and, if you like them, I’m going to get some for every game between now and the end of the season.
