Striker update: Cowley praises Shaw as Palmer move edges closer

Danny Cowley has revealed he’s seen something he likes in Grantham Town striker Lee Shaw, as reported by Lincolnshire Live.

The 23-year old is currently on trial at Lincoln, as revealed by the Stacey West yesterday, and Cowley revealed he’s watched him in action around ten times last season, as well as having him recommended.

Speaking to Mark Whiley, he said; “What really impresses us about him is the fact he’s had some really good financial offers from top non-league clubs, yet he’s turned them down because he wants to follow his dream of playing in the Football League. Being a Grantham boy, Lincoln is a local team for him. He’s coming in on Thursday and Friday and we’ll make a decision off that.”

Shaw has impressed in two seasons at Grantham and at Harrowby before that but is keen to have a stab at the Football League. He’s on trial for two days before perhaps flying out to Spain next week with the squad.

Having slammed home 50 goals in two seasons with the Gingerbreads, he’s hot property on the non-league scene, but his desire to work higher up has impressed Danny.

The news follows mounting speculation that Ollie Palmer may be on his way out of the club. He’s been heavily linked with a move to Crawley, a club that allegedly tried to sign him during the January transfer window. He’s under contract and would command a fee, but that is likely to be nominal.

Palmer split opinion during his Imps reign, coming up with some sublime goals but also struggling to impose himself when given a chance to start. His end of season form did impress some, but the lack of consistency had left him prime for a move away. If he did leave, Shaw aside, it would give the Imps just two recognised strikers in Matt Green and Matt Rhead, although Bruno Andrade is billed as a secondary striker, able to play in the hole.

It’s been suggested by the Nottingham Post that Lincoln missed out on a move for Nottingham Forest forward Tyler Walker. Walker is set to join Mansfield as the highest paid player in League Two, with one Twitter account speculating he could be on as much as £5k a week at Field Mill. Not bad that, especially for a team who can’t afford to renovate one side of their ground, nor have enough fans to warrant it.

Walker will be immense in this division and if he’s played correctly he should bag a few goals too. It trumps the double swoop Notts County made for Kristian Dennis and Kane Hemmings, but again the two of those are likely to command £7k per week combined. It’s a brave roll of the dice by both sides, but at least County have a ground and fan base that can partly fund such huge wages.

Lyle Taylor has also committed his future to a club, ending any linger fantasy that we might be in the chase. It had seemed highly unlikely as the summer progressed, Taylor was linked with Sunderland, Bristol Rovers and a host of other sides. He’s settled on Charlton, offered less money than elsewhere but he can remain in London. Logistics are not just an issue in LN5 it would seem, even Sunderland suffer because of their postcode.

  1. It’s a big step up from Grantham to league 2 but he is certainly worth a look at ,is Danny L Rowe also worth a punt ?
