I’m not going to try to call the XI he will go with, it won’t match my experimental side at all.
Tonight is functional, it is like a warm up game or a friendly. In my opinion, we’re not going all in to win this competition and we won’t be taking any undue risks. If you’re driving to Scunthorpe thinking Shackell and Bozzy will keep ’em at bay, they won’t.
I got very disillusioned with the EFL Trophy after the first round last season. It feels as if we’ve written our story in it and we’re just ready to not bother at all this time out. If you go tonight and feel short-changed when we bring Jamie McCombe on or something like that, don’t say you weren’t warned.
I wouldn’t drop the whole first team, there’s one or two who might benefit from the boost a goal or a decent performance against Scunthorpe’s reserves. I would take the opportunity to play some fringe players though and with that in mind, here’s my XI for our EFL Trophy game at Glumford.
GK: Grant Smith
Surely a no-brainer, one of the two keepers needs a run out and Smith is the one who belongs to us. There’s talk of him leaving on loan, I can understand why, but it won’t be because we’re looking to get rid.
No, Smith has a future here and he’ll be raring to go for tonight’s game. This isn’t just what I’d like to see, it’s what I think will happen too.
