Football Insider, a usually reputable source of rumour and news, has linked us with a move for Mansfield’s Krystian Pearce.
I’ve just put the finishing touches to another article and thought I’d have a little look at the usual sources to see what else has gone off in our division this afternoon and there is the big story; Lincoln and Salford target 29-year-old Pearce.
He was Mansfield’s captain last season and drew plaudits from me for his outstanding performance in our 1-1 draw with them at Field Mill. He’s a top player, a class act in League Two and it would surprise me hugely if we got him. Why? Because we have Cian Bolger, Jason Shackell and Bozzy. Not only that, but he’s contracted until the end of next season and would cost a fee.
Pearce is a right-sided centre half, he isn’t flexible in that he’s also a right back and if we did go for him it would leave us with a huge amount of reshuffling to do. I know we want to cover at the back, I know Danny has said he only signs players who improve the group, but seriously how would he squeeze the Barbados international in? Drop Bozzy? Not going to happen. Maybe Jason Shackell is feeling the pinch at 35, but what about Bolger, a target for Championship sides a season ago?
Pearce came through the ranks at Birmingham City, earned England honours up to Under 19 level and had various loans including a full season with Scunthorpe in League One. He’s had spells with Notts County and Torquay, but has thrived at Mansfield over the last couple of years. I have been wrong about Mansfield before and doubtless if I get this wrong I’ll be corrected, but it’s my understanding he is to them what Bozzy is to us; virtually indispensable.
I might do a stats piece on him in the morning, but for now I wanted to give my opinion on the link and bring the news to those of you who hadn’t seen it. In terms of this actually happening, I’d have to put it at less than 25% chance; Mansfield wouldn’t sell cheaply and I could only imagine it would have to involve some sort of player exchange. Also, the outlay wouldn’t be entirely in keeping with Danny’s recent rhetoric about budgets and a number nine, but then again Danny’s rhetoric about budgets always seems to end up in us pulling a big transfer out of the bag.
I wonder if Pearce is secretly a red-hot number nine? if not, expect him to be a Stag come the big kick off in 15 days time.
