If you’re like most football fans when your club is knee-deep in a search for a new manager, you probably check who the bookies think might be in line for the nod.
They don’t often get it too far wrong. At the time of writing, it seems a two-horse race between Michael Flynn and Gareth Ainsworth – with the Newport boss Flynn just leading the way.
But how many Imps fans had Craig Denton earmarked for Sincil Bank?
Who? You might ask, and rightly so.
The current third-favourite has been plying his trade way down the pyramid for a number of years, this week leaving Northern Premier League side Worksop Town after leading them to an NCEL League and Cup double last season.
After his name popped up in the betting stakes this week, his odds of taking the job have continue to slide dramatically.
But, as he told Tom Scott, you’ll be out of pocket if you plump for him.
“I’ve certainly not been contacted by the club. I think it could potentially be a mistake but I’m a full-time teacher and I’m still learning my trade as a manager,” he said.
“I’ve come from the Northern Counties league to the Northern Premier League so I certainly need a lot more time to continue to develop my own future and my own goals. I think it’s a little bit further in the future something like that.
“The Cowley’s have done a fantastic job, not only at Lincoln but all the clubs they’ve been at and they certainly deserve a chance to prove themselves. They’re two extremely special guys and they’ve done an amazing job at Sincil Bank.
“They’ve left pretty big boots to fill for whoever goes there, but it won’t be me.”
If you’re a fan of a fairy tale, Denton is also a PE teacher – but when has that ever been part of a manager’s back story?
