Anthony Wordsworth

Wordsworth was a key figure in their great escape last season, pivotal in them overturning a ten-point deficit to remain in League One on the final day of the season.

He missed the opening month of this campaign with an Achilles tendon injury but came back in September. With him in the side, the Wombles have won 50% of their fixtures and it’s easy to see why.

The former Ipswich man is combative but brings a level head and experience to the centre of the park. Much of his football has been played at Southend and Colchester and he understands League One; he’s going to be one of Hodges’ key generals over the coming months.

The 30-year-old is also a conduit for the two strikers; he makes 8.02 passes into the final third per game, with a 77.3% accuracy. He’s not one to be making assists though; he’s only assisted two shots during his stint back.

He’s less ‘Jack Payne’ and more ‘Michael O’Connor’. Perhaps that’s why I’ve picked him out as a key player.

  1. An “authentic lower league experience”! Not quite the words I was using at the time! That was a thoroughly miserable day out as I recall…. Cold, wet, no roof, no seat so I could rest my dodgy knee and a fairly dire game ending in defeat… Definitely a day to forget! Hopefully Saturday will be a more positive experience! UTI!
