In the least surprising news of the summer, Imps left back Ben Coker leaves the club on loan after making a single appearance.
Of all the departures this summer, this is probably the most obvious of the lot. Coker has joined National League side Stevenage for the season, upon completion of which his City contract will expire and he’ll leave the club. Almost certainly.
There is no surprise at all really. Coker had a rough time when he arrived, coming in on the back of an injury, then picking up another one before getting fit. He appeared once as we beat Rotherham 3-0 in the EFL Trophy, before being sent out on loan to Cambridge, where he didn’t play at all. I thought there might be a place for him in our squad, but after Jack Payne left yesterday I’m really not surprised and called it in my Dog Walk video this morning.
Upon joining Stevenage, Coker said, “I have been down here for about a week training with the boys and I am just really happy to get it over the line. I can’t wait to get started and show everyone what I can do. For me it is about focusing on playing football and enjoying it.”
A very brief statement by the Imps read: “Ben Coker has today joined Stevenage on loan. The 30-year-old defender has joined up with The Boro on a season-long loan. We wish Ben all the best in his loan spell at the Lamex Stadium.”
As I said, a couple of times, this is no shock. We have Tayo Edun and Max Melbourne who can play left back, with Coker third in the queue and clearly never a part of Michael’s plans. I wish him all the best and just feel a little sad we didn’t get to see more of him, such is football. I know some think he was a frivolous purchase by the previous manager based on the fact they spent time together on a training course, but I suspect had he been fit we’d have seen a decent player. sadly, with every gamble there’s a risk it won’t pay off and whilst Neal Eardley and Michael O’Connor did pay off, Coker didn’t.
If he gets fit, he will be an awesome signing for Stevenage.
Anyway, I’m hoping the brief statement by the club means the media team are busy preparing something a little more substantial….
