5 – Martin Carruthers
Martin Carruthers was coming to the end of his career when he came to City, but I still expected some impact from him. In 1997/98, he hit 18 goals for Peterborough United as they hunted promotion along with us, then he bagged 29 in 83 across two seasons for Southend. At Scunthorpe, he showed all the sharpness of a top striker, scoring 39 times across a gruelling two seasons of 92 matches. he even moved to Macclesfield and hit double figures the year before rocking up at the Bank.
We had a vast array of good strikers already at the club, yeo, GTF, Franny Green to name three, so Carruthers would have to have been special to stand out. As it was, he didn’t score at all in his 11 outings and only stayed a couple of months before moving to Cambridge United, where he didn’t score. It was a shame, I’m sure earlier in his career, he would have been a great striker for us.
