4 – Leo Fortune-West
Maybe Leo-Fortune-West wasn’t prolific when he joined us – seven in 17 for Stevenage and 18 in 67 for Gillingham were his totals, but one season with the Gills saw him return 15 in 45 matches. That stuck in my mind, seeing him near the top of the scorer charts, so when we signed him I was excited. Very excited, especially as we bagged Tony Battersby in the summer too. They looked like a classic ‘big man, little man’ combo and I was certain we’d see the rewards of our recruitment. It took him six games to score, but score he did, as we were beaten 4-3 at home by Preston in a game we led 3-1 with 20 minutes left. Still, three goals and one for LFW (as nobody knew him) was a good sign.
He played five more games for us before he left for Rotherham United, a move which baffled me at the time. After that, he hit 17 in 43 for them in 1999/00, as well as reaching double figures twice for Cardiff and once with Doncaster Rovers.
