Imps squad boosted as 22-year-old returns to Sincil Bank

The City squad has taken a boost this weekend with the return of Aaron Lewis to Sincil Bank.

The Wales Under-21 defender has been out on loan with Newport County, but the South Wales Argus reveals that he has now returned to Michael Appleton’s side, after what might be described as a disappointing stint in South Wales. Lewis, who joined City after spells with Swansea and Doncaster, made one appearance for Mickey Flynn’s team, getting booked as they lost at Leyton Orient.

Lewis is something of a fan favourite amongst certain Imps supporters, having turned in a strong performance against Everton in the League Cup last season. he also had an impressive cameo against Accrington as we lost 4-3 there early in 2020, scoring a goal and looking very lively. However, that promise has not lead to further outings in the first team, although he has been hampered by a series of niggly injuries which have kept him out of the side. Indeed, when I spoke to Michael earlier in the season, he told me there were numerous occasions where Aaron was in a squad last season, only for him to pick up a knock or tweak a problem during the week.

There were those who thought this season might see him progress to the club’s starting right back, but that looks a long way off now after TJ Eyoma, Harry Anderson and Robbie Gotts have all filled in there. Alex Bradley is enjoying a decent loan spell with Yeovil too, playing yesterday as they beat league leaders Torquay, and he is also due back at the Bank.

It does leave young Aaron with something of an uncertain future, but with Accrington coming up in the EFL Trophy, he might yet get a chance to show what he can do in a City shirt. Currently, he has just five appearances for the Imps, three cup starts and two appearances from the bench as a sub in League One.

Aaron tweeted his thanks to Exiles fans last night, saying – @NewportCounty it’s been a pleasure! Spending the first half of the season here & playing for the same club as my Uncle Kenny Morgans has been an honour. Destined for great things this season, thanks again Exiles
