We’re heading back to the Bank this weekend, and that means we can shout abuse at a referee for no reason in particular.
Yup, suddenly a throw being given in the wrong direction will be a reason to question his parentage, or two free kicks against us in succession will have us calling out collusion. You have to feel sorry for the poor chaps sometimes, they have two sets of fans and they can’t please both all of the time. Which referee will be doing his best not to be swayed by a bumper crowd this weekend?
Referee: James Oldham
Assistant Referee: Graeme Fyvie, Ivan Stankovic
Fourth Official: Chris Ward
We haven’t seen an awful lot of James Oldham. The last time he officiated a City game it was against Ipswich last season, a game we drew 1-1. He was last at Sincil Bank at the beginning of last season as we drew 1-1- with Scunthorpe in the EFL Trophy, but don’t worry, he doesn’t only preside over our draws. He took charge of our 5-3 win against Ipswich in 2019/20, as well as our 3-0 victory against Rotherham in the same season.
He is widely regarded as a calm and collected referee, handing out just four reds in 29 matches last season, including one to Josh Vela, the only Shrewsbury player to miss a penalty this week. So far this season, Oldham has officiated two matches, Stevenage v Barrow and Sheff Utd v Carlisle. The game at Stevenage was a bit tasty, and he had to hand out ten yellow cards. He has yet to award a penalty last season, but he has awarded five in his last 20 games, including three in six days back in November.
