Ref Watch: Cambridge Utd (H)

Referees do seem to be dominating Imps games right now. Declan Bourne got the penalty decision so horribly wrong at Crewe, Seb Stockbridge split opinion against Oxford and Jeremy Simpson let a lot go as we beat Sunderland 3-1

We’ve now seen three red cards in five matches, but will that controversy continue against Cambridge at the weekend?

Andrew Kitchen is a first-year referee, so there’s very little for us to draw upon. He has reffed a game of ours before; the 3-0 win against Bradford in the EFL Trophy earlier in the season. I don’t recall anything particularly bad form him during that game, so there’s nothing to suggest we should be worried.

He has flashed a couple of reds this season; one was to Sunderland player Jack Diamond during his loan spell at Harrogate Town in League Two, but it was for two bookings. His only straight red was Tom Bloxham for Shrewsbury on December 18th. He’s not a big one for penalties either; he’s awarded just one in his games this season, for Tranmere away at Carlisle. In 17 matches he’s shown two reds, given one penalty and flashed 46 yellows.

All in all, he seems to be a up and coming ref who shuns the limelight and lets the game flow. Lets hope that’s the case.
