We were blessed this weekend with a referee I have a lot of time for in Martin Coy.
He’s certainly one of the ones you love to see in charge of your matches, but what of tonight’s official? Is he one that will let the game flow?
Referee: Tom Reeves
Assistants: Anthony Da Costa and Stephen Brown
Fourth Official: Leigh Crowhurst
There’s actually very little I can tell you about Reeves because he hasn’t officiated any of our games. This is his first season on the Football League list, having spent three years in the National League. In that time he didn’t seem particularly card happy, although he did send off former Imp Chris Bush in a game between Notts County and Bromley. During that time, he wasn’t entirely unknown to Lincolnshire sports fans; he was in charge in 2019 as Boston United beat Carshalton (any still shudder when they read that word?) 4-1 in the FA Cup.
This season, he announced his arrival on the Football League scene with a red card, sending off Jonathon Grounds as Exeter lost 3-0 at Orient. He’s issued four reds in his 28 matches, all to the away side. His booking ratio is just above average, 94 booking in 28 games, which is a touch over three per game.
This will likely be the biggest crowd he has officiated, although his last two matches have been at Fratton Park (Pompey 4-0 Doncaster) and whatever Wigan called their stadium these days as they won 2-0 against Crewe. Don’t expect a penalty either; he’s only awarded one this season, for Mansfield against Swindon Town.
I think Reeves is on a fast track to the top; he’s been the fourth official in Championship games, notably Luton’s recent clash with Derby County. Given that he’s progressed quickly from League Two to big games in League One, he strikes me as a younger referee destined for better things. Let’s hope that shows in his performance this evening.
