Lewis Montsma Injury Update Issued By Imps

Lewis Montsma’s injury has been a cause of huge concern for Imps fans of late, but there’s a little good news to be found on the eve of the final weekend of the regular season.

The big Dutch defender had to come off during our defeat at Fleetwood Town, and scans confirmed a ruptured ACL, as well as other damage to a knee, requiring an operation and at least 12 months of rehabilitation. Of course, this isn’t ideal, with him having already missed a year of his career, but his rehabilitation has now started after a successful operation.

He had surgery on his knee in Belgium last week and will be supported by the club as he starts his rehabilitation. He will start this process back home in the Netherlands before returning to Lincolnshire in the summer.

“We are delighted that Lewis’s surgery went well, and we are committed to supporting him throughout his extensive period of rehabilitation,” said Jez George. “This will initially be in Holland, as we felt that it would be better for him to be around his family at home while he has limited mobility in the early stages of his recovery.

“Lewis is extremely grateful for all of the messages of support that he has received from his ‘extended family’ at Lincoln City and knows that everyone has him in their thoughts. I would also like to mention our lead first-team physiotherapist Kieran Walker, who has been exceptional in his care for Lewis.”

Lewis signed for the Imps in the summer of 2020, joining from FC Dordrecht. He appeared 50 times in all competitions in his first season, chipping in with nine goals and making the PFA Team of the Year, but since then, his spell here has been blighted by injury. In January 2022, he reputed his ACL in our win against Oxford, ending his season with 26 outings and two goals, including one away at Hillsborough. The club awarded him a new deal immediately afterward, giving him the security to rehabilitate

He returned to action as we beat Accrington 3-0 this season, but was retrospectively banned a couple of games later for violent conduct. He appeared just five more times before the Fleetwood game, which ended this season, and may likely also rule him out next season as well.
