Once upon a time, pre-season was a chance to get a few glamour matches, but in 2023, it’s very different.
It’s all about minutes, getting player’s loads right, trying a few approaches, and ensuring we’re ready for the big kick-off. There are no big Premier League clubs these days, they jet off to the Far East to maximise their revenue. Instead, a pre-season schedule is built around matches that will present a challenge, a workout, and not purely entertainment for the supporters.
This season, we have just one home friendly against Rotherham United. It’s planned for the week before the season kicks off and will be a decent test; building up to that was travel to League Two side Grimsby Town. Our pre-season kicks off in Murcia, Spain, as we face Stockport County, and today two more fixtures have been added.
Michael Bostwick, freshly adorned in the amber and black of Boston, could well line up against the Imps on Saturday, July 15th, as we travel to the Jakemans Stadium. It wasn’t a happy place to be two years back, City conceding five there, and Mark Kennedy will be hoping for a better outcome. The following Saturday, we’re back at Gresty Road, Crewe, for a fixture against yet another League Two side.
There’s one more fixture to be announced, an away game on Tuesday 11th, as well as appearances against local non-league clubs for our younger players.
The Imps’ current pre-season schedule:
Friday 7 July: Stockport County v Imps (Spain)
Tuesday 11 July: TBC
Saturday 15 July: Boston United v Imps (3 pm)
Saturday 22 July: Crewe Alexandra v Imps (3 pm)
Tuesday 25 July: Grimsby Town v Imps (7.30 pm)
Saturday 29 July: Imps v Rotherham United (3 pm)
