Ref Watch: Sheffield United (A)

Referee: PAUL TIERNEY
Assistants: Neil Davies and Scott Ledger
Fourth Official: Anthony Backhouse

We are being graced with a Premier League official this week, but not one we haven’t seen before. In fact, he was in charge of our last League Cup match before relegation, where we were hammered by Leeds United at Elland Road.

That’s one of three matches he’s officiated involving us – the same season he took charge as we were beaten 3-1 by Morecambe, sending off Eric Lichaj in the 82nd minute. His only visit to Sincil Bank came as we beat Bournemouth later in the season – Davide Somma’s brace either side of a Brett Pitman effort ensuring we stayed in the division for one season longer than perhaps we deserved.

Tierney is perhaps best known for his long-running feud with Jurgen Klopp, something that earned him a weekend’s suspension last season. Tierney has no officiated since taking the FA Cup final, although he has been on VAR this season – he did not instruct Thomnas Bramall to look again at a red card issue to Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister against Bournemouth.

Before he takes our game, he will have been on VAR for Chelsea and Luton this weekend, before officiating Arsenal and Fulham on Saturday.

Let’s hope his Liverpool anger doesn’t extend to former players as well!
