The Lord giveth with one hand and taketh with the other.
If that’s not a bible passage, it should be, and it should be in a scene where we’re being handed God’s son, Ethan, as a gift. It acts as a divine warning – you may have the best midfield pairing since the early part of the century, and you may have enough centre-halves to play three different pairs and finish top six with all of them, but you will not have a striker. Oh no. I’m taking those.
Ben House, without a goal in his seven outings this season, has been under the knife and won’t be coming back until well after Jesus’s birthday. We had expected one of our big summer signings back, but now that isn’t happening as we expected.
Last night, in the aftermath of our glorious 3-0 win at Cambridge, head coach Michael Skubala admitted that Tyler Walker’s recovery has taken a hit. I’d heard as much from reputable people on Saturday afternoon but hoped they were mistaken. They were not.
“With Tyler, we’ve probably had a little bit of a setback,” confessed Michael in his post-match interview.
“He’s been to see a consultant; we’re not sure what that looks like yet. We’re still working with Tyler and what his future looks like in terms of his injury.”
The 27-year-old has had a wretched time since signing from Coventry City in the summer. He’s started just three matches and only two in the league, making six appearances overall. The last time we saw him was during our 3-0 win against Blackpool in August, a game he had an impact on when he came off the bench.
It’s a significant blow, given how we’re playing and how a return from injury for some of our players would only give Skubala more tools to work his magic, but it’s not to be. Personally, after last night’s interview, I don’t think Walker will pull on a shirt until we’re into 2024, and we know House won’t either. That means we’re relying on Hackett to come back, but with him returning and Jack Moylan joining up, it does mean we’ll have options as we enter the new year.
It’s still a blow, and before social media blows up, remember Tyler Walker is a person; he will want to play as much as anyone, and his injury record between leaving us and signing back here in the summer isn’t as bad as people tend to perceive.
Hopefully, Tyler will be back in the red and white very soon. In the meantime, Jovon isn’t doing a bad job at all, is he?
