It seems a friendly against Arsenal Under 21s is in the pipeline, although not confirmed by the club (actually confirmed an hour before I wrote this but I missed it).
According to the Arsenal fixture list, their Under 21 side is set to come to the Bank on August 3rd, providing the final opposition for the club before the new season.
Currently, we have away fixtures planned against Preston (in Spain), Harrogate and Oldham, so for the final pre-season fixture, the showcase at the Bank, to be against Arsenal’s Under 21 side, is interesting.
I think it will actually be a really good friendly to have, not from a spectator point of view but in terms of prepping for the season. There won’t be any players on the opposition looking to claim a scalp with a nasty tackle, so it’ll be a far more technical workout and a good opportunity to test ourselves against top young players.
Also, in the past, we have played Under 21 sides and later took players on loan from them, so perhaps this is a precursor to that? Maybe there’s a chance that in the run-up to the season kicking off, we’re in for a young Arsenal player?
It’s not unlikely. Arsenal, like many other top clubs, will likely want the cream of their youngsters to stay with them through pre-season but then release them the week before for six months or a year. Could this be a gateway to that?
I feel an article coming on and, hopefully, confirmation from the club that Arsenal hasn’t made a huge mistake!
