EFL pundit Sam Parkin knows a thing or two about strikers. He was one.
In fact, he was a bloody good one. In three seasons with Swindon, he smashed 73 goals, making him the fabled ’20-a-season’ striker, ‘proven’ in League One. In 441 senior appearances, he scored 122 goals in total, and he was a name I always associated with strong centre-forward play.
That’s why his picking out a current Imps striker as one to watch is really interesting. Parkin knows his stuff; he’s name-checked some of our younger players, but he believes loan signing Bailey Cadamarteri is one that fans across the EFL should be keeping an eye on.
“One signing I want to flag is Bailey Cadamarteri,” Parkin said, speaking on the podcast What The EFL. “In terms of a League One signing, he could be excellent.”
As we know, Cadamarteri signed from Sheffield Wednesday in the final week of the transfer window. He’s been limited to two outings from the bench so far, against Stevenage and Chesterfield, but it won’t be long before we see him fighting for a starting position.
That’s because, despite us being the division’s leading scorers, there’s a feeling we may be lacking a little in terms of clinical finishing. Of the nine goals we have scored so far this season, only two have come from a centre-forward, Ben House.
“I think Lincoln are a side we primarily talked about the absence of a killer threat, maybe or a really good array of options,” said Parkin. “They had obviously Joe Taylor on loan last year; Freddie Draper is there as well, but Ben House and Makama – I think he’s a young lad that came through the academy of Lincoln – they have those two leading the line.
“So, Bailey Cadamarteri, I think League One level, is definitely someone to keep an eye out for this season.”
It almost goes without saying that baileCadamarteri will play some role against Peterborough this weekend, but the eyes of the EFL are on the Imps to see if the striker, with a Young Player of the Month for December in the Championship to his name, can make the same sort of mark Joe Taylor made last season.
