Michael Skubala’s pre-match interview delivered some worrying news for City fans, hoping to see the club beat a 140-year-old record.
If the Imps avoid defeat against bottom club Cambridge United tomorrow, it will see us go 14 away matches unbeaten, a run going back to the defeat against Blackpool on New Year’s Day. That will be one better than our previous best of 13, set in the early eighties.
However, it appears we may have to attempt this feat without some key players, with questions over some key players. Two of those, George Wickens and Zack Jeacock, are goalkeepers, and other members of the squad have suffered from flu this week.
“We’ve got a few situations at the moment, with some illnesses in the camp,” Michael told BBC Radio Lincolnshire. “George (Wickens) should be back, but it’s touch and go. Zack (Jeacock) is out with an injury as well, something’s happened there. We’ve got a few things going on, which is why we need the squad’s depth.”
It appears a flu bug has swept the squad. JJ McKiernan was thought to be close to missing out last week against Wigan due to illness, but he made the game. Now, it appears a handful of others may also be doubtful.
“A few lads have caught the flu and haven’t trained this week, so that might impact the bench on Saturday,” added Michael. “Dylan (Duffy), unfortunately, is dealing with an injury and is out. It feels like we’re getting one player back and another going down with illness, so we’ll assess things again tomorrow and see who’s ready for selection on Saturday.”
It could be a patchwork Imps side come the weekend, which does make achieving that record a little harder, but in the coming weeks, it appears there could be some good news, with two players back on the grass, one widely regarded as a first-team staple.
“The good news is Hamo (Ethan Hamilton) is training really well and getting closer,” added Michael. “Reeco (Hackett) is back on the grass with us this week, which is fantastic.”
The Imps have a decent record at Cambridge since coming back into the Football League – in five meetings we’ve won three, drawn one and lost one, scoring ten goals in the process. we’ve only lost one in ten EFL matches at Cambridge in a run going back to 1995.
Last season, we won 3-0 at the Abbey Stadium, a result which saw Mark Bonner lose his job, and a couple of years prior another win there cost Shaun Derry his job.
