‘See What The Future Holds’ – Imps Target Refuses To Be Drawn On Future

Shamrock Rovers defender Josh Honohan has refused to rule out a move away from Ireland this summer, after the completion of their domestic season.

The left–sided defender has been one of Rovers’ standout performers across their double–winning campaign and is now being closely monitored by several English clubs, including the Imps, ahead of the January transfer window.

Cup Final Victory Followed By Future Questions

Honohan was again prominent in the FAI Cup final, which many in Ireland believe could be his final domestic appearance for Shamrock Rovers. After being named in the PFAI Team of the Season, the 24-year-old is hot property.

After the match, he was asked directly whether the win might mark his farewell before a possible move abroad.

“Yeah, look, I’m not sure. We’ll see what the future holds. I don’t think anyone knows. I think football is that kind of sport where it can change so quickly. I’m just buzzing to get over the line today,” he told reporters after the game.

When pressed on whether he was hoping to test himself outside Ireland, the defender gave a measured response about his long–term ambitions rather than his immediate plans.

“I’ve always said since I’ve come here, since I kicked the ball here, I want to become the best player that I can be, and that’s always my goal. Football is an unpredictable game. We just have to see what the story is.”

Injury Management Explains Absence

Honohan has also confirmed he has been managing a minor injury over the past two or three months, which was the reason behind his omission from the Republic of Ireland squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers. Despite gaps in the national team’s options at left–back, the Shamrock Rovers player was left out to allow time for recovery.

“I’ve been struggling with this for probably the last two or three months, and it’s just kind of the case of managing it. It’s obviously frustrating. You never want to be injured, but it was about giving myself the best chance of playing in the FAI Cup final.

“I think Heimir has been brilliant with that. He knows I’ve been struggling and has a great squad to pick from, so that’s what he’s done,” Honohan explained.

He added that the issue is not long–term and that Rovers’ medical team have helped him manage the situation effectively.

Next Steps

Following the domestic season’s conclusion, Shamrock Rovers have a short break before returning to action in the UEFA Conference League against Shakhtar Donetsk later this month. Honohan said he plans to rest before turning attention to the remaining European fixtures.

While his future remains uncertain, the defender’s consistent form and versatility have placed him firmly on the radar of clubs in England, with City potentially among those assessing his availability once the January window opens.
