Prior to tonight’s match between Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday, the draw will be made for the next round of the EFL Cup, or the Carabao Cup.
The Imps are amongst the second round teams for the first time in 13 years. It’s been that long since our 5-1 victory against Crewe saw us go to Craven Cottage and almost shock Premier League side Fulham.
So, who can we draw tonight and have we played them in cup competition before. As if I’ve got nothing else to do, I’ve gone through all of the teams in the northern section of the draw and found out if we’ve met them in this competition before.
Aston Villa
We’ve never met Aston Villa in the League Cup. In fact, we’ve only played them twice, both in the old Second Division in 1959/60 season.
Both games were drawn.
Blackburn Rovers
We have met Rovers in this cup before, way back in 1971/72. We drew 0-0 at Ewood Park in the first match, but smashed them 4-1 in the replay.
Phil Hubbard got a hat trick as we progressed to face QPR, losing 4-2.
Blackpool
We’ve played them in the FA Cup, losing in 1985 1-0 and in 1979, 2-1. We beat them in the EFL Trophy of 2000/01, Tony Battersby and Lee Thorpe bagging goals.
We’ve never met them in the League Cup though.
Burton Albion
No cup meetings between us and Burton I’m afraid, in fact we’ve only played four times and they’ve won three.
Derby County
We’ve had some wonderful League Cup clashes with the Rams, we won 3-1 in 2004 thanks to Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Simon Yeo and Jamie McCombe. Our last meeting was in 2008 when they won 3-1, Ben Wright getting our goal.
Who can forget 1967/68, if they were there? A record crowd at Sincil Bank saw us lose 3-0 after a 1-1 draw at their place.
Doncaster Rovers
Our last meeting with Doncaster came in this competition, back in 2007. It wasn’t happy, we lost 4-1 with Jamie Forrester our scorer.
We met in the same competition in 1992/93 when it was a two-legged affair, Kevin Finney, Graham Bressington and Matt Carmichael giving us a 3-0 first leg win. Sean Dunphy earned us a 1-1 draw at their place, only for Crystal Palace to knock us out in the next round.
Everton
This would be the dream draw, plus it would echo 1993/94. back then we beat Port Vale in the first round before drawing Everton, who beat us 8-5 on aggregate.
Plus, Clive would bloody love it and he deserves that much for how he’s revolutionised our club.
Fleetwood Town
There’s no history with Fleetwood, mainly because as a league club, they’ve got very little.
The last time we played them, Jamie Vardy hit two whilst Jefferson Louis and Jamie Taylor scored for us. How times change.

Huddersfield Town
They’re Billy Big Time now, but not so long ago they were locked in a battle with us for a place in the play-off final. They won it, sadly.
We did face them in the League Cup of 1966/67, Geoff Anderson and Joe Bonson giving us a 2-1 win before Leicester stuffed us 5-0 in the third round.
Hull City
Another team beginning with ‘H’ who have gone all big-time on us. Hull City were a staple of the football calender up until a few years ago.
We knocked them out in 1980/81, 7-0 on aggregate with Mick Harford bagging five. in 1981/82 it was 4-1 to us, setting up ties with Notts County and later Graham Taylor’s Watford. In 1983/84, earning a stab at Spurs whom we famously beat 2-1 at the Bank, The following season we lost 6-1 on aggregate.
We even beat them in the 1966/67 season in the same competition, Joe Bonson scoring to set up the tie with Huddersfield.
Leeds United
Odd how Leeds is probably classed as a bigger game than some of the Premier League clubs we could face.
They beat us 4-0 in the 2010 competition, McCallum, Jarrett and Josh O’Keefe started for us.
Surprised it was only four.
Leicester City
Premier League winners of just a couple of years ago, Leicester would be a relatively big game if we drew them.
We lost on penalties there in the 2008/09 EFL Trophy, lost 2-1 in the 1975/76 League Cup after knocking out Stoke and also in the 1966/67 competition.
In 1982/83 we knocked them out over two legs, Derek Bell and George Shipley giving us a 2-0 first leg win, with Bell earning us a 1-1 draw, setting up a tie with West Brom in the second leg.
