Thanks, No Thanks – Ipswich Town

No thanks – James Wilson

Courtesy Graham Burrell

This is perhaps the most recent ‘no thanks’ for obvious reasons. James Wilson never seemed to get a fair crack of the whip at City; his injury against Cambridge a couple of months after signing saw him sidelined for a while and when he came back, he always seemed to be pushed out to right back.

Sure, he could play right back, but that wasn’t where he earned a cap for Wales, was it? He was a centre back at a time when we had Jason Shackell and Michael Bostwick, not a competition he was likely to win.

Even as third-choice he didn’t get a decent run and when Cian Bolger signed, James Wilson was surplus to requirements. He was cast aside in the summer to make way for new signings and turned up at Ipswich. He’s impressed there, signed a longer deal and ironically, we’ve seen two centre backs out of action and desperately need some legs in there.

He’ll be relishing this weekend and I don’t blame him.

  1. I fancy Oldham was the second round, once we had got past Altrincham, wasn’t it? And didn’t we have to come through the fourth qualifying round as well? I’m splitting hairs, I know but then I always was a pedant as well as a peasant!

  2. It was a crying shame James Wilson didn’t get a chance to play centre half regularly at city as I thought he looked a talented player at the time and the injury at Cambridge? Put him at the back of the queue unfortunately.
I think he has a good future ahead and I hope it works out for him at Ipswich. After Saturday of course!
Michael Appleton has a good cup record no?

  3. Guisely(x2)Altrincham,Oldham and then Ipswich
    I think!
I always thought we took over 5000 to Portman road,Cup fever and hope had really gripped the city again.Sadly only a 1000+ this time. What odds on a draw saturday and another replay win?
