Exeter City forward Sonny Cox faces up to two months out with a groin injury sustained at Stevenage.

The 20-year-old striker hobbled off after 24 minutes of the Grecians’ 2–1 defeat and has since undergone scans and specialist assessment.

“He had a scan and has seen a specialist. The good news is that he doesn’t need an operation. It was on the better side of what it could have been,” manager Gary Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon.

Cox has scored once in 11 outings this season and his absence comes as fellow forward Carlos Mendes Gomes is sidelined until Christmas.

Caldwell admitted he will miss Cox’s versatility, having used him in a variety of roles. “He has played in different positions for the team and he’s done extremely well in terms of being a good team player,” he said.

The manager added that Cox will bounce back. “I feel gutted for him… But that’s football. These things happen… He’s a player that is strong and hopefully will come back quick.”

The setback leaves Exeter short of attacking options as they look to climb the League One table.
