Luton And Blackpool Weigh Moves For Richie Wellens

Blackpool are not the only ones thinking about a move for Wellens. Luton Town are also considering an approach for the Leyton Orient manager. Luton, who parted company with Matt Bloomfield after a difficult start to the season, have Alex Lawless in interim charge while sounding out candidates. Wellens, 45, has impressed since taking over at Orient in 2022, winning promotion from League Two and then building a competitive League One outfit despite a modest budget.

Any pursuit could hinge on compensation: a fee approaching £1m is understood to be required to prise Wellens from Brisbane Road, a potential stumbling block for both suitors. Geography may also play a part, with Luton offering proximity to Orient and Blackpool representing a return to the North West, where Wellens has strong roots.

The interest reflects Wellens’ growing reputation after earlier spells at Oldham, Swindon, Salford and Doncaster, and the sense that his high-tempo, front-foot style could translate at a club with greater resources. Both clubs are expected to continue due diligence as they balance cost, timing and continuity against the need to reset their seasons.
