Eaves Responds To Manager’s Criticism

Tom Eaves says “crossed wires” caused the penalty confusion during Northampton Town’s comeback win against Mansfield Town, after he took responsibility from Cameron McGeehan before converting the decisive spot-kick in a 2-1 victory at Sixfields.

Manager Kevin Nolan admitted he was “really annoyed” because McGeehan had been listed to take penalties in the absence of Sam Hoskins, but the episode ended positively when Eaves sent Liam Roberts the wrong way to seal the points.

“I actually thought I was on penalties to be honest. I spoke to Algs on Tuesday and said if I’m on the pitch, I’ll take it. There’s obviously been a few crossed wires somewhere, but I’ve waited a year and a half to take a penalty for this club.”

The 33-year-old explained that he delayed his strike to read the goalkeeper, then opened his foot at the last moment after spotting a shift in Roberts’ stance. Eaves came on at half-time and was praised for his impact, noting that a shape tweak helped Northampton regain control following three straight defeats.

He also highlighted the display of Jack Perkins, who took player-of-the-match honours.
