Cleverley Draws Ire After ‘Top Of The League’ Cup Remark

Plymouth Argyle boss Tom Cleverley faced supporter backlash after referencing the club’s EFL Trophy group position in the wake of a 3-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town that left Argyle bottom of League One.

The comment, intended to provide a sliver of optimism before a Bristol Rovers tie, was branded tone-deaf by sections of the fanbase given a run of five straight league losses.

“We will work harder than ever and really knuckle down, and like I said, a competition we’re top of the league in and can take a bit of positivity from that.”

Argyle sit on 13 points from 14 matches, five adrift of safety, with recent injuries and a thin attacking unit piling pressure on the rookie head coach. Despite the fury,

Cleverley vowed to fight on, stressing pride and resilience while acknowledging the hurt of propping up the table. September’s brief revival has faded, and attention now turns to the midweek Trophy fixture, although many fans remain focused on the urgent need for league points.
