Exeter City Counting £100,000 Cost After St James Park Fire

Exeter City are assessing the extent of damage after the fire at St James Park caused major disruption to the club’s control and medical facilities.

Fire crews were called at around 22:00 on Wednesday after smoke was seen rising from a portacabin near the Well Street end of the ground, an area close to the Adam Stansfield Stand. The blaze spread through the temporary structure that housed critical matchday operations.

General manager Clive Harrison confirmed that the financial impact is likely to be significant as repairs get underway.

“It’s early days to estimate on the cost of things but I imagine about £100,000 worth of damage I guess,” Harrison said.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue believe the fire started in an electrical unit and have ruled out arson, describing the incident as accidental. Harrison stated that the club is putting all of its energy into ensuring it can host the next League One home game against Burton Albion on 22 November, with vital cabling and infrastructure needing replacement.

The club has been buoyed by the number of supporters and community members offering assistance as efforts continue to get St James Park fully operational again.
