‘Could Do Something Special” – Everton Loanee Reflects On City Hitting Top Spot

Okay, it’s joint top, but if we were here at the end of the season, we’d still go up.

Will we be here at the end of the season? There is a lot of football to be played, but with more than a third of the campaign gone, we’re in a good place.

Our win against Doncaster Rovers pushed us above teams who were not playing, points on the board rather than games in hand, and that is important. It was a good afternoon for Frankie Okoronkwo, who bagged his first league goal and his first at the Bank.

The grounded Everton loanee confessed that he feels like he’s taken a while to get going.

“I feel like it has been quite a while,” said the striker. “It is November now, the season started in August, but I feel that at the moment I have hit a little purple patch, so hopefully I can keep it going.

“I feel like it is even better to score at home in front of all the fans. I did not want to be a loan player who hides in the shadows and comes off and on. I want to play for the fans and it is nice to get my first one at the home stadium.”

When questioned about a second half miss, he also admitted he could, and should have had more.

“On another day I probably have about four, to be honest, but I am just glad we got the win and the three points.

“I need to work on starting games a bit quicker, but as long as I am getting those opportunities and getting in those positions, more goals will come.”

Overall, City come out of the second international break in a good position, with points on the board and a run of matches against teams not enjoying their best season: Wycombe, Port Vale, Blackpool and Barnsley. With Christmas full of six-pointers against Stockport, Cardiff and Huddersfield Town, we could be in a great place going into 2026.

That’s certainly the thought of Okoronkwo, who finished by telling John Helm we might do something special.

“I think what we have got going is very good, and I feel like this is the position we should be in, especially with the staff we have and the players we have. We could definitely do something special this season.”
