Former Imps Duo Take Charge Of Local Rival

Okay, rival might be pushing it, but a pair of former Lincoln City trainees have taken the helm at Lincoln United, albeit temporarily, following the dismissal of Scott Hellewell and Paul Grimes.

The decision to remove the pair from post was something of a shock, and while the Whites will look for a permanent manager, they’ve turned to a pair of names with Imps links. You may not recall either wearing Imps colours, but they did, in spells with our YTS setup.

Dave Frecklington is a well-known name from the local football scene, having not only managed the Whites before, but also Gainsborough Trinity. He had spells with the likes of Frickley and Spalding Town before returning to Ashby Avenue as Director of Football.

He’s the interim manager, while another former Imp, James Morgan, will now be his assistant. James, known as Jamie during his spell with the Imps, was a YTS with us from 1991/92 through to 1993/94. He stepped up from the younger ranks early and featured for three seasons between the sticks, failing to make the breakthrough.

However, not only was he a teammate of Dave Frecklinson, but also the likes of Darren Huckerby and Matt Carbon. Morgan also worked under Keith Alexander when he was the youth coach, but left the club when Sam Ellis took over, unable to earn himself a professional deal.

He’s been the keeper coach at Lincoln United for eight seasons now, and it’s odd because when I saw the post, I swore the name rang a bell, confirmed by one of our Discord users. That youth team of the early 90s really stood out for many supporters, and while some of the players went on to bigger things, they did so on the back of having a safe pair of hands behind them.

Both men will also get to work with a Lincoln City legend – Alan Power has penned a deal to play for the Whites this season, once again pulling on a Lincoln shirt. If he achieves a fraction of what he did at Lincoln, then we could have some story to tell about Lincoln’s second team.
