Sean Raggett
I know Raggs inclusion might anger a few of the purists who feel he was too recent, but it has to be said the boy was pure class. Like some of the other names on here he’s earned his move up to a higher division and rightly so.
I’m sure you know all of this, but the talented defender was snatched from Dover and (if rumour is to be believed) from under the noses of Barrow. His fee had to be settled by tribunal because we couldn’t reach an agreement with Jim Parmenter and, despite believing they’d screwed us, we got a proper defender. However much we had to pay, it isn’t enough.
Sean Raggett came to us a raw but willing young man, but he continued to develop in front of our eyes. He was a great player when he arrived, he was an excellent one when he departed. It would be crass to attribute it all to Lincoln City, it was perhaps more his work ethic, his attitude and determination to get to the very top.
Over and above all else, he is a very good footballer, a defender who can tackle, head and even play a little bit. After helping us to the National League, at times at both ends of the field he became a City hero. After scoring the last-minute winner as we beat Burnley in the FA Cup, he became a City legend.
He cemented that even further by joining Norwich City and coming back here on loan to help us negotiate the first few months of this season, even heading a winning goal to contribute to this weekend’s Wembley appearance. The younger voters will be clicking on his name, it’ll be interesting to see how he stands up to some real Imps heavyweights.
No Terry Cooper? Shocking!!
As talented as Paul Morgan was – and he’s my choice – I do recall how comically bad he was at knocking the ball forwards from the back!
He rarely made a mistake though and always had the pace and skill to recover if he did.
Jamie McCombe was every bit as good for us as McAuley & Morgan.
I can’t vote for Morgan, as we never saw him in a traditional back four. He was always in the sweeper role, mopping up what the two giants in front of him didn’t.
I’ve voted for the duo that I think complement each other the best, Austin for his pace & power & Raggett for his aerial prowess.
Peake and Thomson were the best pairing I’ve seen in an Imps team but you can’t ignore McAuley for the time he has lasted in the top league. So Peake and McAuley for me.
Not sure if I am just biased against Morgan because the journalist prior to Curtis always referred to him as Baresi, and although he was decent he was never that good. My personal feeling is that he is thought of as better than he was because he didn’t just hoof it, but I don’t think he did enough of the key stuff well. Unlike McCauley and McCombe he also didn’t play at a higher level after
I’ll vote for Peake, given he was brilliant, but also because he told me to get off the pitch on my third lap of the centre circle as an over-keen, seven-year-old mascot. Happy memories!
