Four Years On: Where Are Our National League Heroes Now?

Paul Farman

The Macclesfield win was Paul Farman’s last appearance in the National League for the Imps, his 44th of the season. He’d struggled with an injury for much of the run-in, and was given a well-deserved rest for the following two games. Farms was outstanding at times, not only in this game but also in others across the gruelling campaign. His highlight was the Man of the Match performance in the FA Cup Quarter Final against Arsenal, but he rarely put a foot wrong.

He played 13 times for the Imps in the Football League, his last appearance a 2-2 draw with Swindon in which he was embarrassingly singled out for criticism. He spent two years with Stevenage, one of which saw them hunting a play-off spot, and he’s currently played 40 times for Carlisle in League Two, with 14 clean sheets.

Bradley Wood

Bradley Wood’s name is often uttered in hushed tones and sadly for him, the die was already cast as he celebrated on the field with the other players. His final ball had been kicked and the scandal was already in motion. It is a shame, Wood was an excellent player for the Imps, committed and strong, and a popular figure away from the grass. When fans queued for FA Cup tickets, he turned up with flasks of tea. It made him a cult hero and that only added to the shock of what was to come.

He was banned for six years for getting intentionally booked in the FA Cup win against Ipswich Town and passing the information on to friends. His ban is reported as five years for match-fixing, and a further year for breaching other betting regulations. It was a sad end to a promising career for the right-back, and obviously, he is no longer in the game.

Sam Habergham

Sam was another who played through injuries until that final game and, like Farms, he didn’t play after that game either. He started the following season injured, and despite appearing 40 times in all competitions, including the EFL Trophy Final, he persistently struggled with injuries. His last game for City came on 21st April 2018, almost three years ago.

This year, Sam made a comeback after missing two full seasons. he signed for Grimsby Town, themselves looking likely to be relegated, and has since appeared in 11 matches for them, starting nine.
