League One Team of the Season So Far – How Close Are City Players?

For a bit of fun, I decided to see which 11 players make up the League One Team of the Season so far, according to Wyscout.

Wyscout utilises an extensive array of metrics to evaluate player performances across various positions. By analyzing detailed statistics—such as pass accuracy, interceptions, defensive duels, and offensive contributions—Wyscout objectively identifies top performers suitable for specific formations, including the classic 4-4-2 setup.

In the current League One season, Wyscout’s metrics have highlighted standout players for each position in the 4-4-2 formation. Notably, no players from Lincoln City have been included in this selection, indicating that, based on the analysed statistics, individuals from other clubs have outperformed their Imps counterparts in their respective roles.

Here is the League One Team of the Season so far, as identified by Wyscout’s metrics and where Imps have ranked. it’s bound to get some Wycombe fans talking….

GK Ryan Allsop (Birmingham City)

Ryan Allsop, a Birmingham native and former Imp, is the Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper. Known for his shot-stopping abilities and command of the penalty area, Allsop has been instrumental in Birmingham’s defensive solidity this season.

George Wickens currently ranks as the 12th-best keeper in the division. Former Imp Josh Griffiths is 8th.

RB: Ryan Barnett (Wrexham)

Ryan Barnett began his career with Shrewsbury Town before making a significant impact at Wrexham this season.

Tendayi  Darikwa is the third-best in the division, with Ethan Galbraith ahead of him.

CB: Kristian Bielik (Birmingham City)

Kristian Bielik, originally from Poland, is a central defender for Birmingham City. He’s a former Arsenal youngster and far too good for this level.

Paudie O’Connor is statistically the 11th-best central defender in the division, according to Wyscout. That immediately made me doubt the veracity of the stats.

CB: Christoph Klarer (Birmingham City)

Christophe Klarer, a former Austrian Under 21 international, partners with Bielik in Birmingham City’s central defence. He played top-flight German football last season and is an obvious pick, whether using stats or not.

Sean Roughan is ranked as the 24th-best central defender in the division, which is a decent finish for a 21-year-old. Indeed, only 20-year-old Brodie Spencer is younger than him in the 23 players above.

LB: Mal Benning (Shrewsbury Town)

Mal Benning, plays as a left-back for Shrewsbury Town and should really have been sent off when we met on Boxing Day.

Interestingly, Dom Jeffries is ranked as the 23rd-best lateral defender (either side) and the 11th-best left-sided defender.

LM: Malik Mothersille (Peterborough United)

Malik Mothersille sometimes plays left midfield for Peterborough United. His pace, dribbling skills, and knack for delivering precise crosses have made him a significant threat to opposing defences.

He’s classed as a ‘lateral forward’ and there are no such players from the Imps in the top 30.

CM: Lewis Wing (Reading)

Lewis Wing, a key midfielder for Reading, is known for his vision and passing accuracy. Wyscout classifies him as a defensive midfielder.

Ethan Erhahon is rated as the 28th-best in the division, according to Wyscout.

CM: Harvey Knibbs (Reading)

Harvey Knibbs, also representing Reading, has impressed across the Royals midfield. Knibbs progressed through the academies of Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa before establishing himself at Reading.

Rated as a plain old central midfielder, he falls into the same category as Tom Bayliss (21st), Jack Moylan (23rd) and Conor McGrandles (24th).

RM: Kwame Poku (Peterborough United)

Kwame Poku has been injured for half of the season but is still ranked as one of the best players in the division. He plays as a right-sided attacker for Posh.

As on the other flank, we don’t really play with right-sided wingers or haven’t for a majority of the season, and so there’s nobody in the top 30.

CF: Charlie Kelman (Leyton Orient)

Charlie Kelman bagged a goal against the Imps in our game against the O’s earlier in the season, and he’s carving out a real name for himself. He’s scored 14 league goals this season, leaving him fourth in the table, but his all-around input makes him an entrant into the Team of the Season.

Here’s a boost for one of our young players – Jovon Makama is rated as the 15th best forward in the division, with Wyscout counting his winger stats in this field. It would be interesting to see where his metrics left him in terms of right wing….

CF: Sam Smith (Wrexham)

Sam Smith has been prolific in scoring 15 goals. Most of those have come in the blue and white of Reading, but he’s now wearing the Red Dragon of Wrexham on his chest., just not in the graphic!

I think this is a surprise, but Ben House is rated as the 26th-best striker in the division, despite not netting since December 14th.
