On the most recent episode of the award-nominated Stacey West podcast, we were asked by a Patreon member whether or not we’d be interested in anyone on the free agent list.
Our answer, which I’m sure you’ve all heard as you all listen (right…), was an emphatic ‘no‘. That was a little off-the-cuff, as I didn’t actually look at any of the free agents. I just feel that our squad is deep and we don’t need to be adding players to it, especially not those who didn’t attract offers from other clubs prior to the window closing.
That is, of course, short-sighted. Adam Reach joined us as a free agent just before the window closed, so we obviously did see some value in players currently without a club.
With that in mind, I have looked over the list and picked ten players who could probably do a job for the Imps.
To stress, I don’t think we should sign any of them, but I know readers love a post-deadline day free agent article.
Josh Ginnelly

Former Imp Josh Ginnelly is on the list, and an interesting proposition.
Ginnelly emerged from Aston Villa’s academy before earning a debut with Shrewsbury in August 2014, where fleeting appearances highlighted raw pace and direct running. A move to Burnley followed, and while first-team minutes did not arrive at Turf Moor, a productive loan with Altrincham (and an outing agaisnt City) showcased end product and resilience.
Two spells with us had differing outcomes. He contributed to our National League title, but he didn’t succeed the following season. When he left, a career lower than us was expected.
He later played a part in Tranmere’s successful National League play-off campaign and made a strong start on returning to Walsall, prompting a transfer to Championship outfit Preston. The most sustained top-level influence came at Hearts, where he converted speed into a consistent threat, hitting double figures in the Premiership and helping secure the 2020–21 Championship title as the club consolidated on its return.
A switch to Swansea arrived in 2023, where an eye-catching debut goal signalled his intent, but as of September 1st, he is still a free agent.
