Jack Payne
Here’s a recent entry and one some might find harsh. It’s perhaps more of a personal one for me, because I firmly believed Jack Payne was going to be the final piece of the Imps’ League One promotion jigsaw. who knows, maybe Danny had stayed, Jack would have settled, but the truth is he promised a lot, and delivered little.
Even his debut was impressive and I was convinced he would be Player of the Year from his first outing. I remember that 2-0 victory against Accrington at the beginning of last season so well, we looked brilliant and Payne was right at the heart of it, with Jorge Grant also contributing. As the weeks passed, Payne faded and as we know, Grant did not. Maybe a couple more goals or a handful of assists would have got Jack firing, but they didn’t come and he left at the beginning of this season firmly in the bracket of promising much and delivering little.
