The tale of Billy Knott is a sad one. On his day, few were as technically gifted as him, but off the field few were as troubled. I’ve picked him for this list because he fits into the mould of a player I admire, the ‘ten’ figure, capable of changing a game with a moment of magic, committed to getting fans off their seats. After his decent loan spell with us in 2016/17, he arrived permanently and it seemed as if he was destined to reignite the career he started at Chelsea and Sunderland. Sadly, he wasn’t, and a red card away at Notts County severely dented a decent start to the season. he never got back on his stride and later joined Rochdale on loan, before leaving the club.
He later opened up about the demons that plagued him during his career, depression and drink, and is currently plying his trade in the Southern non-league scene.
