Liam Bridcutt Injury – Assessing the Alternatives

James Jones

I wouldn’t have put Jones in this bracket, but a conversation with my mate Pete this morning brought him up as a possibility and it would be remiss of me to not include him. If he plays as the four, McGrandles and Grant could operate further forward and maintain continuity in the midfield.

Pros

There is no reason why Jones couldn’t play as a four. He’s certainly robust, we’ve seen him putting plenty of tackles in and he’s got the right distribution skillset to operate there. He’s been around the first team enough this season to fit into Michael’s patterns too, which is something he has over the next option.

Cons

Firstly, we have barely ever seen him in that role. I think he got the last fifteen minutes or so of the 1-1 draw with Manchester City Under 21s in the holding midfield role, and he sat alongside Grant in there against Burton at Christmas, but rarely has he been the lone four in our conventional system. Of the three we have who play further forward, I feel Jones is perhaps least suited to the role, which isn’t a negative, just that I feel McGrandles and Grant are better options.
