Potential Starting XI Against Swindon

GK: Alex Palmer

This is the obvious shout and the one player we really would miss if he got injured. We don’t have an experienced stopper on the bench, so Alex Palmer would be a big, big miss. Luckily, he isn’t injured and will be between the sticks, resolute and as reliable as (almost) every game he plays.

I think of the new signings, Poole has settled in the quickest. He could have bagged against Wigan and he seems to have a real forward momentum that fits our style. In fact, when you think about TJ in the area, you see his weakest area of the field (that’s no slur by the way, TJ is ace). In Regan Poole, I sense we have a player who will have a ‘three’ or ‘four’ in the goals column next season. He might even get one or two before the end of this.

For some, the jury is still out on Cohen, but I think that is unfair after four outings. What he needs is time and games, and with the current injury crisis, the time is right for him to get another start. I’ve loved what I see going forward, his dinked pass for McGrandles in the Sunderland game was excellent and I think he reacted well to the tough start against Accrington. I suspect he might be used at left back this evening, his second start for the club.

In terms of first-team players, Montsma really was the jewel in the crown ahead of the festive period. He hasn’t looked as assured since coming back in, perhaps because Jackson and Walsh have. Sadly, both of those players look like missing the game, which hands Lewis a chance to shine once again. He stood out for his goals earlier in the season and he is the one central defender I feel is a real threat in the opposite box. He’s got enough under his belt to slot in easily too, and is one of three centre backs who are interchangeable in my eyes.

TJ surely has to play in the other centre back spot if we are missing Walsh and Jackson. He’s never let us down as far as I can recall, and he looks as composed as any player we have on the ball. He’s got good pace and strength and despite being deployed as a right back, he is comfortable centrally. Tonight will be a good battle though, Brett Pitman is a right handful and what might be termed as a ‘proper shithouse’, so the defenders will need to be aware.
