Three Winners and Three Losers as Michael Appleton Departs

Winner – Max Sanders

I’m 99% certain that my nephew genuinely thinks that Max’s full name is ‘Poor Old Max Sanders‘, because whatever the lad has done, it’s not worked here. He’s won your Player of the Month one season, and whilst he hasn’t been spectacular every game, he surely did enough to start on Saturday? Instead, we went with Lewis Fiorini and that was about it. Sure, I know Lasse was meant to be in midfield, but unless he was disguised as fifty yards of grass in any direction around Lewis, he wasn’t at his best. Max did get on, but it seemed that it would be the last time we saw him.

That might not be the case now. If there’s a player in there (which there is), then he could well find himself given a new lease of life under a new manager. Whilst recruitment will be consistent, the new manager will pick the team, will coach the players and perhaps, will breathe new life into a player seemingly heading down the A1 this summer. Max wouldn’t ever say it, but I bet he’s wondering if this might just be the start of his Lincoln City career.

Loser – Liam Bridcutt

I was absolutely convinced that Liam Bridcutt would be a Lincoln City player next season. I would have placed my house on it, right up until 4pm on Saturday afternoon. The moment Michael’s departure was announced, I felt that would be that. Any new manager will want his own generals, we saw it with Michael when he came in; out went Jason Shackell, Lee Frecklington and Michael O’Connor, Danny’s boys. Liam is very much Michael’s boy, and that puts him in a dangerous position.

He’s also had a horrible season with injuries and is out of contract. If he had 35 games behind him or another year deal, then I think he’s professional enough to work under anyone, but given the situation he finds himself in, injured and with no new deal, I fear we might have seen the last of our captain.
