1979
In 1968 a legend was coming to the club, but 11 years later, one was leaving. John Ward would be back, briefly, a couple of seasons later, but in 1979, he brought an end to his nine-year stay at Sincil Bank, joining Graham Taylor’s Watford. The fee, £15,000, would be around £70,000 with inflation.
That’s not a bad price for a player who turned out 241 times in the Football League, scoring 90 goals, with a further nine from 22 cup matches. He did reappear, briefly, in 1982 before going on to become the greatest manager the Imps never had.
