Referee: ADAM HERCZEG
Assistant: Daniel Bonneywell and Leigh Crowhurst
Fourth Official: Aaron Bannister
I saw the name and thought we’d got a ‘bad’ ref today, but in truth, I only recall one game he officiated and it was a rubbish EFL Trophy encounter. He’s taken two games of ours, the second we won 3-0 and he had little to do.
Adam Herczeg is in his third year now. He appeared in the National League in 2020/21 and had a decent season. He only sent off two players, both against Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium in front of a big crowd. The following season, he didn’t issue a red card and stepped up to the Football League. We had him once in the 2021/22 campaign, for the EFL Trophy game against Doncaster, but I wasn’t convinced.
“There were no nasty tackles, but somehow referee Adam Herczeg spotted 13 – a ludicrous amount for a glorified friendly,” was what I wrote. “He was poor all game, from not letting us make a sub in the build-up to the goal that levelled the game, through to his inconsistency and pickiness. If I see his name on one of our league fixtures, I’ll certainly not relish the afternoon’s football.”
However, in our 3-0 win against Wycombe at the start of last season, I had no cause to mention his name, which could suggest the Doncaster game was a one off. After all, while we like to think there are good and bad refs, there probably aren’t. Some are stricter than others, but on the whole, they apply the laws of the game how they see fit, and are judged on their actions by their superiors.
Thus far this season, Herczeg has officiated three games at our level, giving 24 fouls, leaving him slightly below average, 20th out of 38 referees. His fouls per tackle is higher, he’s 12th out of 38, meaning he is probably a little pickier than some. He’s 18th out of 38 for yellows, and has awarded a single penalty, in the recent Orient and Peterborough encounter.
