Pre-Season Friendlies The Imps Never Finished

Luton Town 0-0 (January 12th, 1982)

I know, the picture doesn’t look like thick fog hit the game, but it did. Just after halftime of another mid-season friendly, the referee called a halt, and this one was a little more prestigious. There was method in the apparent madness – the Imps hadn’t played a league game since early December and needed match practice ahead of a game against Gillingham. Luton, six points clear at the top of the second division and boasting games in hand, wanted to keep their promotion challenge on course. Between them, the two sides had lost nine of their last ten fixtures, City five and Luton four. Kenilworth Road was under 12 inches of snow, and Luton wouldn’t be back in action for a week.

This was a strong Luton side – Raddy Antic, Clive Goodyear (released by Lincoln as a youth), Mal Donaghy, Ricky Hill and Brian Stein played, whilst City featured Luton loanee Wayne Turner, who went on to be a regular for Luton until 1985. Stein went close for Luton twice, Turner and Tonny Cunningham had efforts for City, and Shipley missed an early penalty after Goodyear pushed over Bell. Neither team scored, and Maurice Burton explained that just six minutes into the second half, the match became unplayable.
