The Greatest Managers We Never Had

Lennie Lawrence

Lennie Lawrence was a familiar face for Imps supporters, having been a coach here when we won promotion from the Fourth Division in 1981. He later went to Charlton as a youth coach, stepping up to manager before getting them into the First Division in 1986. He then moved to Middlesbrough where he helped them into the Premier League but then saw the club relegated before his departure.

He left there around the same time that we were hunting for a new boss, and his name cropped up as a possible replacement for the outgoing Steve Thompson. Sam Ellis was the man who eventually got the job, and Lennie went to Bradford, Luton, Grimsby, and Cardiff, with another promotion under his belt with the latter.
