Paul Woolston

Woolston came through the youth system at Newcastle United, where he played for their under-18 and under-23 teams, as well as appearing in the EFL Trophy. He also gained senior experience on loan with Darlington 1883 in the National League North during the 2016/17 season. Alongside his club football, Woolston represented England at under-17 level, featuring in tournaments such as the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

In 2018, he joined Manchester United, becoming a regular for their under-23 and under-21 sides in the Premier League 2, EFL Trophy, and International Cup. He made over a dozen appearances before being forced to retire from playing in 2022 due to injury. Since then, Woolston has moved into coaching, working as a goalkeeping coach, including a role at Al Jazira Club in the United Arab Emirates.

Will Fish

Fish progressed through Manchester United’s academy and made his first-team debut as a teenager in a Premier League win over Wolves in 2021. A loan at Stockport County followed, but it was two seasons with Hibernian in Scotland that provided him with consistent senior football and valuable experience.

In August 2024 he left Old Trafford permanently, signing a four-year contract with Cardiff City. The centre-back quickly established himself in their defence and remains a regular in League One. He has also represented England at youth level, scoring for the under-17s against Germany.

Dion McGhee

Dion McGhee was a regular for Manchester United’s under-18 and under-23 sides, also appearing in the UEFA Youth League and the EFL Trophy. He built up more than 30 games across competitions before departing in 2020.

He joined Newcastle United’s under-23s for the 2020/21 season, making one Premier League 2 appearance, before moving to Portugal later that year for brief spells with Sporting Braga’s B and U23 teams. He’s not currently with a club.

Charlie McCann

Charlie McCann left Manchester United in 2021 to join Rangers, where he began in the B team before breaking into the senior squad and making a handful of first-team appearances. He gained experience in the Scottish Premiership and cup competitions but found opportunities limited in a competitive squad.

In January 2023, he moved to Forest Green Rovers, playing over 80 matches across two seasons in League One and League Two. McCann departed the club in the summer of 2025 by mutual consent, and is still a free agent.

Anthony Elanga

Anthony Elanga rose quickly after his United breakthrough in 2021, winning the club’s Jimmy Murphy award and scoring his first senior goals against Wolves and Brentford. He added a memorable Champions League equaliser at Atlético Madrid before regular minutes became harder to find.

A £15m move to Nottingham Forest in 2023 rebooted him: he hit double figures across two Premier League seasons, with standout contributions against Chelsea, Tottenham and his former club. In July 2025 Newcastle United signed him for a reported £55m, where he has begun a new chapter on the wing. Capped by Sweden since 2022, he has five senior international goals and remains a fixture in their squads.

Dillon Hoogerwerf

Dillon Hoogewerf was highly rated when he left Ajax’s academy for Manchester United in 2019, becoming Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s first signing as manager. He impressed in youth football, scoring a hat-trick for the U18s against Newcastle, but never broke into the senior side before leaving for Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 2022.

He spent two years with their reserve team, making over 20 appearances, before moving back to the Netherlands in 2024 with Vitesse. Now in the Eerste Divisie, Hoogewerf continues to rebuild his career, establishing himself as a regular winger and still only 22 years old.

Mark Helm

Mark Helm came through Manchester United’s academy, spending over a decade with the club before leaving in 2021. He moved to Burnley in search of senior opportunities, earning early praise in pre-season but failing to make a first-team appearance. In January 2023, he joined Burton Albion, where he quickly established himself as a regular in League One and went on to make 56 appearances across 18 months, scoring eight goals.

That form earned him a move to Fleetwood Town in July 2024. Dropping into League Two, Helm has continued to impress as a versatile midfielder, capable of dictating play and contributing goals.
