Tony Battersby
Tony Battersby was our club-record signing at the time, moving from Bury in 1998 after we won promotion to the third tier.
He had an unremarkable time with the Imps, scoring 21 times in 130 outings, before moving to Boston United. he was a decent enough player, one I backed massively at the time, but there is nothing major to suggest he would cause a social media sensation.
Apart from the fact that he was a Championship Manager legend. Champ Man was the original incarnation of Football Manager, and Battersby was worth £2.2m on one of the early games.
Imagine that. City signing a player who had such a big value in that game. I can imagine if we signed a player of that standing now, the expectation level would be through the roof.
Battersby might have got a lot more stick had he signed when people could offer their opinions based purely on a video game.
