Referee: Charles Breakspear
Assistants: Danny Guest, Anthony Da Costa
4th official: Martin Coy

This season, Charles Breakspear has taken charge of only two EFL fixtures, both arriving in December. His League Two appointment saw Crawley Town draw 2-2 with Oldham Athletic on 13 December, a game in which four yellow cards were shown. That was followed by a League One fixture on 29 December, where Cardiff City defeated Stevenage 2-1, again with three yellow cards issued.

Outside the EFL, Breakspear has officiated matches in the National League, National League South, and the FA Cup, bringing his total to five competitive games this season, with 15 yellow cards and one red card shown across those fixtures.

The Imps have crossed paths with Breakspear on six occasions across League One and the National League, with the record offering little encouragement from an Imps perspective. Those fixtures span more than a decade, from the Conference campaign of 2012-13 through to the goalless draw away at Wigan Athletic in December 2023. Across those six matches, City have yet to record a victory, taking one draw and suffering five defeats, scoring three goals and conceding 13.

I was pretty complimentary of him in that Wigan game, writing “Charles Breakspear, who didn’t have a terrible game for me, gave a foul on Jensen. I think he got it spot on; Wyke stepped into Jensen and nudged him to stop him from dropping on the second ball. The home commentators even agreed, and as they were fairly partisan all afternoon, I figured the decision must have been right.’

Other games he has officiated involving us include losses against Burton Albion, Southend United, and Forest Green Rovers, alongside heavier defeats away at Kidderminster Harriers and at home to Sunderland, the latter ending 4-0.

While discipline has not been a defining factor in these games, results under this official have consistently gone against the Imps making it a referee record that has so far failed to bring much fortune for the Imps.
