Peter Gain
I’ve said it a thousand times before and I know before I’m in the ground, I’ll say it a thousand more times. Peter Gain was perhaps my favourite ever Lincoln City player.
I can’t list all the reasons why, it would take too long. Whether it was moments of brilliance, or matches he controlled, when this boy played well he was unstoppable.
After he left, he played 71 matches for Peterborough, featuring on the ‘Big Ron’ documentary and scoring nine times. 21% of his goals for Posh came against us.
He opened the scoring in January 2006, the same game Simon Yeo bagged and was sent off in. His celebration was quite controversial at the time, something he later explained to me;
“I got a lot of stick that day. I was always passionate on the pitch, but when I heard personal insults, not related to football, I reacted. I hate the fact that Lincoln supporters remember that and the manner in which I left, it’s heartbreaking.”
“In hindsight, I would never have dreamt of celebrating a goal against the fans I loved for so long, but like I said during a game so much adrenaline takes over, and when I heard personal insults, I lost my head. It wasn’t football related and I directed my frustration out on that minority, not the real Lincoln fans, although I still feel some were bitter towards me sadly”
A year late he scored against us again, just for good measure, but we won that match 2-1, with Ryan Amoo of all people bagging a brace.

You can’t leave out TT in 1983. The Newport game in a prolonged torrent of rain, me and my old man leaving at half time, (the first and last time) I ever left a game early. I was only thirteen and had no choice! The wheels had come off Murph’s first mission and TT had come back to haunt us! The team and squad disembarked soon afterwards going on to play at higher levels. Your dad could have populated a half a page on this after you had removed the swear words from the whole page.
No Kevin Ellison?
I was at Telford when Perry came on as sub and scored twice, having been happily chatting with all and sundry during the HT ‘warm up’. Nice bloke, in a band, I thought he was the bees knees, a key component as Tilson returned the Imps to their rightful place in the EFL.
