He’ll Score Past Us: Five Lincoln City Players Who Came Back to Haunt Fans

Kyle Perry

You know a story is going to be bad when I almost started it with the words ‘this is a classic’. The thing is; this is a classic.

If you were around in 2011/12, you’ll remember Perry. Think a poor man’s Matt Rhead. He was big, he had a great personality but he lacked that one vital component: skill.

I liked him, genuinely. Sure, he was a big lump with limited ability, but his persona appealed to me. He played in a rock band and seemed to be just like you or me. Unless you’re not 15 stone, then he was just like me.

He didn’t make the grade so we loaned him to Telford. In return, we borrowed Robbie Williams (another rock star, although the real Robbie might have been a better shout). We agreed with them that Perry could play against us if Williams was afforded the same courtesy.

You know what happened next. I’m not sure how many other players have scored their only Sincil Bank goal against us whilst contracted to us. I’d imagine you can count them using

He scored four goals all season, once on the opening day as we beat Southport and the other three in matches between Telford and Lincoln. He bagged twice there as we won 2-1 in August, then against us to secure his side a 1-1 draw.

He didn’t play for us again. Odd that.

  1. You can’t leave out TT in 1983. The Newport game in a prolonged torrent of rain, me and my old man leaving at half time, (the first and last time) I ever left a game early. I was only thirteen and had no choice! The wheels had come off Murph’s first mission and TT had come back to haunt us! The team and squad disembarked soon afterwards going on to play at higher levels. Your dad could have populated a half a page on this after you had removed the swear words from the whole page.

  2. No Kevin Ellison?

I was at Telford when Perry came on as sub and scored twice, having been happily chatting with all and sundry during the HT ‘warm up’. Nice bloke, in a band, I thought he was the bees knees, a key component as Tilson returned the Imps to their rightful place in the EFL.
