Lincolnshire Non-League Roundup – All Evens In Big Local Matches

A few mixed fortunes for our non-league clubs this weekend.

Boston United had a home game against Tamworth, hoping for a fifth win in a row, and started strongly in front of a crowd of 1,938 at the Jakeman Stadium. However, Tamworth’s delaying tactics throughout the match gradually wore Boston down and the game finished in a rather dour scoreless draw, with Boston unable to break the visitors down. It is, however, another solid point pulling them away from the relegation places, with good performances from one of the latest signings and now captain Jamie Grimes, Jake Rooney, cousin of Wayne, and Imp Osin Gallagher.

Gainsborough travelled to Manchester to play FC United in what looked to be the set-up for a cracking game when the teams with the best home record and the best away record in the division met. It did finish as an end-to-end match, with Trinity taking the lead in the 24th minute through a goal by Harrison Beeden, and that was the half-time score.

Again, there was end-to-end action in the second half as United equalised in the 64th minute, although controversially Trinity had a player off injured and were refused a substitute change they had requested just before United equalised. However, it was a good point shared in a promotion battle for both teams, and it helps Trinity progress in their fight for promotion.

Lincoln United were hoping to continue their league revival away at Bridlington Town and included new signing Josh Waldram from Wombwell Town on the bench. It was another end-to-end match, finishing goalless in the first half, but Bridlington took the lead in the 57th minute. That spurred Lincoln into action, and they equalised with a penalty converted by Elliot Dye in the 85th minute after previously having one disallowed for offside and hitting the woodwork.

With a rush of blood to the head, Swinn was sent off in the last minute for United and, down to 10 men, Bridlington pushed and got a 94th-minute winner to take all three points. Disappointing, but they deserved at least a point from the game and the team is improving and getting stronger.

In the United Counties Premier North, two of our teams did not play, with Skegness Town not having a game and Grantham Town at Nuneaton in the SGD League Cup, unfortunately losing on penalties after a 3-3 draw. However, Boston Town were at home to Newark and Sherwood hoping to stop the rot of three defeats in a row. They included new signing Finley Ging from neighbours United in the team and in the first half created most of the chances without converting, and it was goalless at half time.

The second half looked to be following the same pattern and a draw looked on the cards when substitute Fraser Bayliss gave Boston all three points in the last minute to keep their promotion push on track. With their next game against leaders Sherwood Colliery, it was a victory very much needed.

Harrowby United, at the other end, had a day to forget at home to AFC Mansfield. Following a pitch inspection the game went ahead and Harrowby found themselves 1-0 down at half time. In the second half Mansfield were dominant and scored four more times, giving Harrowby a 5-0 home defeat and leaving them still struggling in the relegation places.

Spalding United are top but still need points as the team behind have four games in hand and were away at Royston this week. Their new signing Ben Fowkes, a forward from Leiston, started on the bench. Spalding pushed forward but at half time it was still all square.

In the second half Spalding pushed even harder and were rewarded by goals from Ceesay in the 57th minute, Pugh in the 83rd minute and Akambi in the 89th minute to give them all three points and consolidate their lead at the top.

Stamford, at the other end, were hoping to follow up their midweek win against St Ives in their match away at Barwell. However, they went a goal down in the first minute. Stamford took control and equalised in the 12th minute with a goal by Leon Lobjoit and it was one-way traffic for Stamford, but at half time it was still level.

Stamford again pushed hard in the second half but, almost against the run of play, Barwell got the winner in the 87th minute. A disappointing result but still a strong performance to carry on to the next game.

In other non-league games, Sleaford Town were managerless after Matt Evans was sacked midweek after seven defeats on the trot. Chairman Damon Tunnicliff took charge of the team in their away game against Stapleford Town. Sleaford started well with Benji Zalenski scoring in the sixth minute and that was the score at half time.

However, Stapleford equalised in the 64th minute and, although Zalenski scored Sleaford’s and his second to retake the lead in the 79th minute, two goals by Stapleford in the 84th and 86th minutes gave them the three points and Sleaford their eighth defeat in a row.

Brigg Town also included two new signings, Reece York and Jack Richardson, in their squad and it was end-to-end in the first half against Route One Rovers, but it was Rovers who took the lead in the 38th minute. Brigg pushed hard in the second half but failed to score, leaving them pointless from the game.

Pinchbeck United also had a game to forget away to Holwell Sports. They had new signing Jake Henderson from Boston Town included in the team and at half time it was goalless. However, conceding four goals in the second half, three in the last ten minutes, sent them crashing to a 4-1 defeat, with the consolation goal by Collie in the 67th minute.
