Cardiff consider appeal after Sala damages claim dismissed

Cardiff City are considering an appeal after a French court dismissed their claim for more than £100 million in damages relating to the death of Emiliano Sala.

The long-running legal case stems from the 2019 plane crash that killed Sala and pilot David Ibbotson. Cardiff argued the striker’s death contributed directly to their relegation from the Premier League and caused wider financial damage, but the court rejected that argument.

The court ruled that Nantes were not responsible for organising the flight and ordered Cardiff to pay legal fees and damages. Cardiff now have one month to decide whether to appeal, though any further legal process could take up to two years.

“It’s difficult to understand how the court considers that Willie McKay did not organise the flight, given that he himself said that he did,” “We initiated this process so that the full truth would come to light in this case and out of respect for the memory of Emiliano Sala.”

The case has been ongoing for several years and has already involved rulings from FIFA and the Court of Arbitration for Sport, both of which previously ruled the transfer between Nantes and Cardiff was valid.

The situation remains unresolved, and the legal and financial implications continue to affect Cardiff years after the tragedy.
